Elephant, coffee & rice

On our second to last day in Bali we went on a tour. We'd hired a driver who took us around.
First we stopped at Goa Gajah, the Elephant Cave. Apparently it's an elephant head above the entrance to the cave, I didn't think it looked like an elephant but it was still nice :)
After the cave we went to a coffee plantage which was great! We got to see the gardens with coffee beans, cocoa beans, gingseng, sugar canes, avocados, passion fruit, tamarillos, pepper, tobacco and lots more and we also had a guy who told us everything about them, it was really interesting.
Then we got to try some coffees, teas and hot chocolate. Neither Andrew nor I like coffee but we actually liked 2-3 of them and bought the vanilla and the gingseng coffees and lemongrass tea and ginger tea.
Then it was time for lunch and we had lunch at a restaurant called Bar Swastika (!) and we had amazing views over Lake Batur and Mt Batur.
On our way back to the hotel we stopped and had a look at rice fields.
It was a really nice day and we were both really impressed with the coffee place.

Monkey Forest

Today we went to Ubud and walked around for about 5 hours. We checked out the market, some shops and the Monkey Forest. When we finally managed to get to the forest there was a sign saying it was closed, but there was no gate and we saw another couple walk in so we followed. It didn't take long until we saw the first monkey and then there were more, they were everywhere! I think the monkeys are a bit scary and I don't want them to get too close. There were people selling bananas which we could feed the monkeys with but no thank you, we saw a woman who had bought bananas and the monkeys were all over her.
The actualy temples were closed but we didn't mind, I mean we were there to see the monkeys :)

Nyepi Day

Today it's Nyepi Day, the Day of Silence. It's not as bad as it sounds, we don't have to be completely quiet but we did get some rules to follow.
No one is allowed to go out on the streets or to the beach or anywhere, there are guards patrolling the streets to make sure no one leaves their house or hotel, you are not allowed to light fires or turn on the lights, you are not allowed to do any work or make too much noise. All this to convince the evil spirits that no one lives on Bali and they will leave the island alone for another year.
So yeah, we were not allowed to leave the hotel but luckily we were allowed to leave our rooms, we could stay by the pool and stuff. Then all of a sudden some members of staff started to cover the windows and doors of our room with black plastic. I asked them why and they said it was so that we would be able to have the light on without it being visable from the outside. That was nice and quite clever of them but it is a bit creepy to sit here without being able to look out, but on the other hand, it's completely black outside so we wouldn't be able to see anything anyway.
None of the TV channels work but we have a DVD player and we got some movies in Thailand, so we've watched some of those :)
This is where we spent our day

Ogoh-Ogoh

When we got up this morning the sun was shining, it was lovely! We had breakfast then swam in the pool, when we saw the rain clouds come closer we got inside and just in time before the sky opened up. So we got ready and then we took a taxi to Seminyak center, by then the sun was out again and we had a look around the shops and had a really nice lunch before checking out the beach.
Tomorrow it's Nyepi Day, the Day of Total Silence and it's more or less exactly as it sounds and the "celebrations" started today with most places closed or they closed early. So when we went to get some dinner it was quite hard to find somewhere but we did.
Then we saw bits of the parade with big "dolls" called Ogoh-Ogoh, symbolizing evil spirits. The dolls were not pretty but I guess that was the point, but the little kids helping with carrying them were so cute!
Tomorrow will be interesting. We got an information sheet with some rules for tomorrow but they weren't that clear. I mean, we are not allowed to turn the lights on, but what about the TV and laptop? All this is "happening" between 6 am tomorrow morning to 6 am Saturday morning. So if we can't use the TV or laptop or have the lights on, there will be an early night tomorrow :)

Bali

We are now in Bali!
We arrived on Monday, the weather was a bit so and so, a bit of cloud and a bit of sun. We took a walk to the beach but it was sooo windy there, we got completely sandblasted, I still have sand coming out of my ears and hair!
Yesterday it rained, started of as a drizzle so we took a walk, then when we were having lunch the rain picked up, big time, it was proper monsoon rain. So when we'd finished eating we took a taxi back to the hotel. Then I went to a spa nearby for some massage.
So far Bali is cheaper than Thailand, at least for massage, food and taxi and stuff. However, the selection of alcohol is not very good, there are no real "brands" and they say you should be careful with local alcohol cause you might get poisoned and we don't want that now do we :)

St Patrick's Day

Yesterday it was St Patrick’s Day and it was also David and Anna’s last day here in Phuket so obviously we had to celebrate this.

So we went to Karon, to an Irish pub (of course). It was also rugby on TV but the England v Ireland game didn’t start until 1 am our time so it was a pretty long night. Felt a bit sorry for David and Anna, their bus this morning left at 6 and we didn’t get back until after 3.

We had a brilliant night and even though England won no one in the place seemed too upset.

So what else have we been up to? Not much really, just the usual; sun, sea, pool, food, drink, shopping and of course some Thai massage. We have to make the most of it, we don’t have that many days left of this trip. Leaving tomorrow morning, very early in the morning so it will be an early night tonight.

Thailand

We are now in Thailand, feels good to be back :)

Yesterday we met up with David and Anna who we haven’t seen since they left Melbourne in August (Andrew worked with David) and it was so great to see them again! They have been travelling around a bit as well and it was fun to compare stories.

Today we’ve just been chilling out on the beach, the water is a bit too hot for our liking, it was nicer in Hoi An but hey we shouldn’t complain, plus our rooftop pool is a bit cooler and the view is also pretty amazing :)

We’ve now been out for dinner, I had a Swedish pizza and bearnaisesauce, it was soooo good. I’ve been waiting a long time for this pizza and it was just as good as I remembered.

Creative!

På Malaysias största IT varuhus.

Several years ago I bought a new MP3 player, it was a Creative Zen V, it was perfect. It was small, cute, simple to use and worked perfectly!
For about 1-2 years ago it started to get a bit broken, I couldn't flick as much as I wanted cause it just fastforwarded the songs instead. I was so upset, I loved that MP3 player. So I started looking for a new one but couldn't find it. There were just iPods everywhere! I didn't want an iPod, I wanted a Creative!
But what to do? The player didn't work and luckily Bibbi was nice and gave me her old iPod and yes it's good and I could fit a lot more songs on it, my Creative was only 1 GB the iPod is 8, but it's not a Creative :)
I've looked in every country I've been to, but couldn't find one in England, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong or at any airport I've been to (which has been a few). But yesterday I found one! In Malaysia's largest IT mall. I was so happy! Ok I'll still keep my iPod, it is good, but now I finally have a Creative again :)

Kuala Lumpur

We are now in Kuala Lumpur, the trip here went well, I was a bit worried about the weight in our bags since we (I) managed to do quite a lot of shopping in Hoi An, but it went well, I was even under! I am awesome at packing :)
We didn't do that much on our first day here, we thought we'd go out for dinner but a storm had come in and there was quite a lot of thunder, lightning and rain so we decided to have dinner at the hotel and it was a good choice, the food was good and quite cheap.
We live on the 14:th floor so we got a good view of the storm.
The weather was a bit better the day after so we took a walk and ended up at Petronas Towers, there was also a massive shopping centre tehre so we had a look around Harrods and then had a tea.
Same thing today, just walked aroud. We can't do too much shopping which is all you can do here, there are shopping malls everywhere! We thought we'd go to the movies but not a lot of good movies have had premier here yet so we'll just wait.
Tomorrow we're moving on again.

Full Moon Hoi An

Idag var vår sista dag här i Hoi An.

Today was our last day here in Hoi An. We have had a great time and Hoi An is definitely a new favourite holiday destination for us. The beach is beautiful, the town is really nice, the people are nice, there are lots of little shops full of nice things and it's cheap. You can get handmade shoes and clothes at a very reasonable price. Food and drinks are also very cheap and nice.
Tonight it was a full moon so it was a bit extra festive in town. None of the restaurants by the river had their lights on, just candles and there were lots of lanterns floating down the river. It was so beautiful!
There was also a lot of music and different shows here and there in town and it was all free. What made it extra nice was that it wasn't just tourists there, it was actually more Vietnamese people which made it feel a lot more real and nice. It was so nice!

My Son

Klänningen behövdes sy in lite och byxorna hade dom glömt fixa.

Yesterday we went on a little trip, to the My Son (pronounced Me Son) ruins. Our guide was hilarious! The bus ride took about an hour but it was quite entertaining. Then we were in My Son for approx 2 hours, it was 35 degrees hot and I had forgotten to bring sunscreen, hat and my fan, but luckily I did remember the camera and water :)
The ruins were really nice but it's such a shame that the Americans and French had ruined them so much. The Americans bombed the place and placed lots of land mines and then French "archaeologists" came and stole a lot.
I almost felt a bit sorry for the American tourists on our tour, I mean America has a lot to answer to here in Vietnam, but the Americans on the tour were a bunch of annoying tossers so I didn't really feel sorry for them, I just wished they would shut up.
Anyway as I said, the ruins were beautiful, the tour was entertaining and interesting and even though it was so hot it was a really good morning.
In the afternoon we went in to town, first stop was my tailor Miss Forget Me Not and I tried on my dress, a shirt and trousers. The dress needed to be altered and so did the trousers but the shirt was really nice. Andrew also had a shirt made which was really good.
Next stop was the shoe maker, my sandals were done and fit like a glove but Andrews shoes needed a bit more work so we picked those up today.
Then it was time for some "pampering", still in the market. We had a foot scrub and she scraped our feet with one of those razors they used to shave people in the old days! Then a woman wanted to pluck my eyebrows with some cotton thread. My mom had warned me about this but it only cost 2 pounds so I thought ok, but holy moly it hurt! It hurt so much I cried!
In the evening we went to our second tailor Kimmy where Andrew had his first fitting for his suit and I tried on my blazer, both of them needed some work done and we had our second fitting today.
On our way to Kimmys I managed to find another tailor (shocking, they are everywhere) and I happened to order another dress! Then Andrew managed to find a shoe maker and happended to order a pair of really nice hand made leather boots.
I think that saying "shop til you drop" is very appropriate here, there are so many nice quality things and it doesn't cost a lot!

HOT

Hoi An

We are now in Hoi An, it's a lot nicer than Hanoi. Not as much traffic, it's a lot nicer and warmer and has a beach!
The town is so beautiful, it's really nice down by the river and the houses are so nice.
Hoi An has approx 1000 tailors, so yesterday we went to one of them. It's a bit hard to pick which one to go to but we had done some research and I think we picked a good one. I have a list of clothes I'd like to have done but I started off with 3 items, then if they do a good job I'll order more. I'm going for my first fitting today.
It was very cloudy in the morning yesterday which was fine since we were running around in town, but when we had finished at the tailor the sun had come out so we went to the beach. It was a lot nicer than we had expected. The red flags were up so if you got in the water you had to be very careful since the currents were really strong. We didn't swim though, we just chilled out and enjoyed the weather.
In the evening we had dinner down by the river. Andrew had a San Miguel beer, 650 ml which only cost 60 pence!

Halong Bay

We had an early start yesterday, got picked up really early to go to Halong Bay where we would go on an overnight cruise.
The weather was a bit crappy, a bit foggy and cold! It was 25 the day before and now it was 12! No one on the cruise was really prepared for that and no one had packed very warm clothes.
When we got on the boat we got a welcome drink (hot tea) and then we got the keys to our cabins. There had been a mistake or something, there were 4 couples who had booked double rooms but there we only 3 double rooms and one twin, but Andrew and I said we could take the twin room, we spend enough time together as it is :) Plus that turned out to be a good move, we actually got a bottle of wine and some bananas as a thank you.
Lunch was nice, quite a lot of seafood but I tried it all (except the squid) and a lot of it was nice.
Then we went to Sung Sot Cave which was pretty amazing. It's a massive cave up in a mountain. It was huge and so beautiful!
We were supposed to do kayaking after that but it had started to rain so no one really felt like it so we went back to the boat. We didn't really want to do the karaoke either but instead we had some vodka and had a great time with some Canadians, Scots, French and some guys from Melbourne. I think we went to bed around 3 and then we got up again at 7 when it was time for breakfast. Needless to say we were pretty tired today but that was fine, we didn't have anything planned anyway.
When we got back to the harbour we went for lunch, but it wasn't that nice to be honest. Then there was the 3 hour bus ride back to Hanoi.
I had to wear jeans and a jacket when we went for dinner, I can't believe it got so cold, it was hot one day and then cold the next! Lets hope it gets a bit warmer now.

Hanoi

We are now in Hanoi and it's crazy. The traffic is completely mental! There is no space to walk on the sidewalks so you have to walk on the streets and there are mopeds everywhere and cars and bikes and stuff, everyone are beeping their horns and it's just mental! However, I think we have figured out how to cross the street without being killed :)
Last night we had the best Pho Bo (beef noodle soup) so far! On the way back to the hotel we got lost, there are a lot of streets here and we had spent most of our time focusing on not being run over. We did find a bar with really nice and cheap drinks, the coconut mojito was sooo nice and a vodka and sprite cost 90 pence and a pint of beer 45 pence, yep PENCE! It's cheap to get pissed here.
Today we have walked for most of the day. We walked around Hoan Kiem Lake, had some lunch, did some shopping, walked some more and after all that walking I had to treat my feet to a pedicure.
Facebook doesn't work here, it seems to be blocked, don't know why. Apparently there is a way to get around the block but to be honest we're not that addicted to FB so we can't be bothered figuring out how to get round the block. But if you have tried to contact us via Facebook it will take quite a while before we will be able to get the message, so if you want to get in touch with us, just send an e-mail :)

Bye bye Hong Kong

Vi kollade även in Time Square Mall och kollade i typ 70 elektronikbutiker.

Yesterday was our last day in Hong Kong, we went to Time Square Mall, had a look in loads of electronic shops, then went to Temple Street Market but to be honest Ladies Market seemed bigger and better.
At 8 pm we watched the Symphony of Light down by Avenue of Stars. The weather was a big crappy, very cloudy and a bit of a drizzle but it was still good.
Now we're att he airport, going to Vietnam :)
Having some lunch
