Visste ni att i Australien kallar dom flipflops ”thongs”? Det förvirrade mig rätt mycket när vi gick till en restaurang som hade en skylt som förklarade att det var förbjudet med ”thongs”. Jag undrade om dom verkligen gick runt och kollade om folk bar stringtrosor eller inte och om man skulle bli utsläng om man hade på sig string.

Sedan såg jag att de hade rea på ”thongs” i en skoaffär i stan! Varför säljer dom stringtrosor i en skoaffär? Strumpor kan jag förstå, men stringtrosor!? Då jag fick reda på att ”thongs” här inte betyder stringtrosor, utan det betyder faktiskt flipflops.

I Nya Zeeland kallas dom ”Jandals”, tyckte även att detta var lite konstigt men jag kunde förstå "andal" biten av ordet, det är ju som ”sandal" men vad stod "J" för? Jag var tvungen att googla det eftersom jag är så nyfiken och tydligen är det bara en förkortning för "japansk sandal". Så, nu vet ni det.

Did you know that in Australia flipflops are called thongs? This confused me a lot when we went to a restaurant that had a sign saying that thongs were not permitted. I thought do they really check if people are wearing thongs? Then I saw that they had a sale on thongs in a shoe shop in town, why would they be selling thongs in a shoe shop? Socks I understand but thongs!? Then I found out that thongs here are not underwear, they are actually flipflops.

In New Zealand they call them Jandals, I wondered about that as well, I can understand the “andal” bit of the work, it’s like “sandal” but what about the “J”? I had to google it since I am so curious and apparently it’s just short for “Japanese Sandal”. So there, now you know.
